Passenger Safety

How to identify the licensed driver and vehicle, use booking confirmations and contact Northline during a journey.

Only travel in the vehicle shown in your confirmation.

London private hire journeys must be booked through a licensed operator. Northline will send the driver and vehicle details before the journey starts.

01

Pre-book

Never accept an unbooked offer from a driver or enter a private hire vehicle from a rank.

02

Check the confirmation

Match the registration, driver’s first name, private hire licence number and driver photo where supplied.

03

Check the vehicle

London PHVs normally display TfL licence discs. Drivers must wear their private hire driver ID while working.

04

Call if unsure

Do not get in if anything differs. Call Northline on 020 0000 0000. Call 999 in an emergency.

Booking confirmation

The confirmation will be available by an appropriate channel before travel and contain, as a minimum, the vehicle registration, driver’s first name, driver’s private hire licence number and, where you can receive it, a driver photo.

During the journey

  • Wear a seat belt and ensure children are seated safely.
  • Tell the driver or operator immediately if you feel unsafe or the route appears materially wrong.
  • Do not distract the driver or ask them to stop illegally.
  • Share the booking confirmation with a trusted person where appropriate.

Licensing checks

Passengers can use TfL’s online licence checker to verify London private hire operators, drivers and vehicles. Northline’s legal and operator licence details are displayed in the website footer.

Complaints and crime

Service complaints can be made to Northline and escalated through TfL’s comments and complaints service. Suspected crimes or immediate danger should be reported directly to the police.
